I am truly passionate about the amazing beauty of nature, processing it through my eyes, my mind and my hands to the stillness of canvases and plaster, aspire to express not the picture, but the life itself, without forgetting the fabulousness of human presence in it. On canvases I work with brushes, palette knifes and finger touch when needed. My 3D paintings consist of the plaster figures, sculptured and carved on the base of the wood frame, finally covered with acrylic colors, creating spatial view, as real, as color - induced.

My work is inspired by the beautiful light here in Cornwall. I attempt to capture the atmosphere and sense of transient beauty in my paintings. I will often make small paintings on location which also serve to inform larger paintings that I create in my studio. I love the visceral, expressive qualities of oil paint, often working alla prima to capture the atmosphere of the moment, sometimes building up work slowly, working over ghosts of images to create a palimpsest. I completed my BA (Hons) in Fine Art through the University of Kent in 2010 and then went on to complete a PGCE in Art and Design through Canterbury Christ Church University to become an art teacher. Feeling the need to focus my attention on painting full time, I left my job as Head of Art in 2020 and moved to Cornwall in 2021.

Using the sewing machine as a tool for continuous line drawing, my work explores movement and texture with often unpredictable outcomes, which have been likened to ink illustration. Julie's work focuses on the wild side of nature, dance and motion. Each piece is unique and one off. The speed and capricious nature of the sewing machine, when used in this unconventional way reflects characteristics of the subjects. Using reclaimed fabric, paper and handmade felt opens new opportunities to discover how the stitched marks respond to different surfaces, pulling or embossing a piece of work in sympathy with the surface. Threads are purposely left loose over or around the image to allow the illusion of more depth and movement.

My favourite time of the day is that magical moment at last light when everything appears to intensify and stand still. My interior spaces are about places we inhabit and our half forgotten memories of being there. These are the most abstract and lyrical of my works, they are often prompted by everyday objects. The absent figure in the painting is the viewer who brings their own interpretation to the painting.
