I am a landscape painter, mostly of the northern landscapes of Britain and Ireland. I am inspired the by the experience of the energy of the sky and the earth as an irreducible whole.
In studio painting I work mainly in oils and in acrylics. In drawing and outdoor colour work I use a variety of media including found earth materials such as clay, peat, soil, rain and snow as well as the energies of wind and sunlight.
I try to express feelings of connection and reciprocity in my perceptions of nature rather than feeling emotionally distanced from my subject. I am part of this world and it is part of me, which is how it feels when I’m out there drawing.
Studio paintings allow the imagination to run freer and I’m often trying to create something which is only half formed in my mind. Allowing the painting to breathe and speak to me is part of the game but another important part is to see how others see it and perhaps discover something in it that I had not seen before and make it better. Thus the visitor to my studio can be an important if unwitting collaborator in the creation of new work.
