But I Feel Good

This painting tries to conjure up a set of memories of a place called Low Newton and Embleton Bay, Northumberland in northeast England. The shoreline is protected from further development by the National Trust and part of the dunes are a nature reserve. However, Embleton Bay is popular for recreation even though it is far from a city or town and there are no large caravan parks nearby unlike certain other beaches in the UK. Dotted among the dunes are old wooden holiday chalets, which can only be occupied for six months of the year, and behind the big dunes is a golf links. The hamlet of Low Newton has a pub and a tiny corrugated tin church. Offshore is a tidal reef which gives some storm protection to the beach so that in days gone by fishermen at Low Newton would have launched their Cobles from the beach. The turquoise hut might have held fishing tackle once and been painted tar black but nowadays is more likely to hold beach recreation gear. On the horizon to the right are the remains of a 14th century castle on a rocky headland at Dunstanburgh, a reminder of a different time for the human inhabitants of Northumberland. In the sky high clouds lie in layers of warm and cool greys, typical of the northeast coast. The prevailing wind is offshore and has flattened the sea on an ebbing tide.
