Time Keeps On Slipping

This painting is based on a some sketches made at Embleton Bay and Ross Back Sands both on the Northumberland coast. Dunstanburgh Castle lies at the south end of Embleton Bay and dates back to the early 1300s by the 2nd Earl of Lancaster. It was painted by William Turner but not from this angle. Turner didn’t have a computer screen lying on the beach either. I photographed it in the sand at Ross Back sands near Holy Island a few years ago and often wondered how it got to such a remote place. In my painting a storm is brewing as the tide comes in. A couple of summer sandpipers feed by the water’s edge. I sketched on the beach as the tide came in and had the feeling of time rolling on inexorably remembering the lyrics to a Steve Miller song from the 1970s “Time keeps on slippin’ slippin’ into the future”.
