The Imperceptible Progress of Waves

Just north of Bamburgh Castle on the Northumberland coast in northeast England are some dunes near a small lighthouse. I made sketches there a few years ago in the late summer and created this painting recently based on the sketches and photos I took. It was one of those days when the clouds lie in flat sheets high above, when the sunlight is strong in a clear sky and the marram grass is turning yellow and going to seed. Even in a relatively remote place like this, there are signs of human habitation. The tide is coming in and the sunlight reflects strongly off the surf. I can hear it now as I type. The composition aims to convey the sense of wellbeing I often feel when I’m out drawing on the coast.
