Same Place Same Time

A view of Ross Back navigation beacons looking towards Holy Island, Northumberland, England. The painting is based on sketches from a couple of sketching expeditions to Ross Back Sands. The painting is essentially the view across the salt marshes to the two 19th century Trinity House brick beacons with the small rocky St Cuthbert’s island and the dunes of Holy Island beyond. The tide is out, possibly on the turn and the time is heading towards sunset in early spring. A brisk cool breeze blows offshore from the left, bending the slender but tough marram grasses. A thousand years ago and more Viking long boats would have nosed their way in here raiding the Christian monastery of St Cuthbert and St Oswald on Holy Island so the place feels ancient.
