I am a painter of northern landscapes and of the sea. I'm an established artist in the north of England but I'm also known more widely with for example my TV participation in the SKY Portrait Artist of the Year competition.
About Lionel Playford
Based in Cumbria, United Kingdom. member for 14 Years
I am a landscape painter, mostly of the northern landscapes of Britain and Ireland. I am inspired by my outdoor experience of the energy of the sky and the earth as an interconnected whole - the weatherworld.
In studio painting I work mainly in oils and sometimes in acrylics. In drawing and outdoor colour work I use a variety of media including found earth materials such as clay, peat, soil, rain and snow as well as the energies of wind and sunlight.
I try to express feelings of connection and reciprocity in my perceptions of nature rather than feeling emotionally distanced from my subject. I am part of this world and it is part of me, which is how it feels when I’m out there drawing.
Studio paintings allow the imagination to run freer and I’m often trying to create something which is only half formed in my mind. Allowing the painting to breathe and speak to me is part of the game but another important part is to see how others see it and perhaps discover something in it that I had not seen before and make it better. Thus the visitor to my studio can be an important if unwitting collaborator in the creation of new work.
At a professional level I am a commissioned artist for a number of buildings in northern England and in Germany. I am also an art residency holder funded by various organisations including the Leverhulme Trust and the Alfred Wegener Institute in Germany. I have taught painting and drawing for many years in adult education and at university degree level. I am currently researching a biography of artist Nerys Johnson of Durham.
