Boreraig, An t’Eilean Sgitheanach.

By William Swann

Boreraig, An t’Eilean Sgitheanach.

Boreraig, Isle of Skye.  Oil on canvas 30 x 20 inches.  Framed size 36 x 26 inches.

Frame colour “Charleston Grey”, Slip colour “Dimity” both by Farrow and Ball.

Boreraig is a difficult place to paint.  There is an overwhelming sense of history, walking amongst the ruined houses, made more poignant because of the circumstances in which they were abandoned.  This is not the place to review the brutality of the clearances.  However, I have tried to capture some of the emotion I certainly feel looking across the ruins, which are slowly melting into the slopes that once supported the Boreraig community.  What always gets to me is the survival of green land, once cultivated and evidence of the hard work of generations of the families that lived here.

Artist’s notes: this is an uncompromising painting and makes the point that fine art is about emotion rather than decoration.
