Ceathanna báistí, Carna, Conamara.

By William Swann

Ceathanna báistí, Carna, Conamara.

Clearing Rain.  Carna, Connemara, Co. Galway.  Oil on canvas 14 x 10 inches.  Framed size 20 x 16 inches.

Frame colour “Mole’s Breath”, Slip colour “Dimity” both by Farrow and Ball.

The Wild Atlantic way follows the coast of County Galway from Clifden through Roundstone and onwards towards Galway City.  The route gives fine views of the Connemara hills.  Sometimes desolate, always sublime, the coastal landscape is windswept and eroded but strangely beautiful.  A mix of holiday homes and small settlements follow the road.

Artist’s notes:  on the day of this painting, we had driven from Westport via Letterfrack and Roundstone in torrential rain. Being October, not much was open.  Just after Carna, the rain stopped and a beautiful radiance developed over the hills, something you rarely see away from the west.  I included the old concrete stumps, remnants of past land reorganisation.
