Éirí Gréine thar an Inis Bigil ó Ascaill, oileán acaill, Máighiú.

By William Swann

Éirí Gréine thar an Inis Bigil ó Ascaill, oileán acaill, Máighiú.

Morning, Askill, Achill Island, Co. Mayo. Oil on canvas 14 x 10 inches.  Framed size 19.5 x 15.5 inches.

Frame colour” Charleston Grey”, Slip colour “Dimity” both by Farrow and Ball.

The slip at Askill is on the Achill Island east coast, where Achill Sound opens into Blacksod Bay to the north.  With a fragmented coast and many small islands, boats are essential for keeping communities connected.  The small slip across the water on Inishbiggle (Inis Bigil)  makes the point about connections but the main theme here is the sense of isolation.

Artist’s notes:  how to capture loneliness and isolation in paint?  The view of the distant hills and island seen across the bay is simple but compelling.  The soft light from the sun adds to the overall sense of isolation.  I dislike over-sentimental paintings and I represented the concrete slip as it is.
