Blue Birds

‘Blue Birds’
January 2019

This artwork merges retro aesthetics with social commentary. Two female figures, reminiscent of the 1960s, dominate the scene, their silhouettes sharply defined and contrasted against a layered background of complex textures. Splashes of pale blue paint flow, adding dynamism and depth. The text “The Games Men Play” and “Bird Watching” are strategically integrated, prompting reflection on social roles and gender perceptions. The use of black and white accentuates the contrast and lends the work a timeless quality, while highlighting the lines and curves of the figures. This composition is compelling in its commitment and aesthetic, blending nostalgia with contemporary critique.

Blue Birds was first showed at the art show Retro Fantastic at the Dutch Design Hotel in Amsterdam in 2019.

For Retro Fantastic, I worked on the theme of the fantastic 50s and 60s.
Those were the days; the future was promising.
From nowadays reality, I looked back to the rise of capitalism and consumerism with a nostalgic and critical eye.
In this series, images of the good old days are set against a different reality. Tales of hope and glory when men conquered space, science was the future, bombs were power games and plastic was fantastic.

Blue Birds is a mixed media composition on canvas.
Acrylic paint, transfer collage, pastels, felt pen.
The artwork is signed, varnished and delivered with a certificate of authenticity.
