Hartside Pass, Evening Commute

This painting is one of many I have made over the past 25 years of driving the road down Hartside Pass to the Vale of Eden. It shows a cloud inversion with the Lake District mountains of Blencathra and Skiddaw peaking above the sea of cloud, like a chain of islands. The weather and light alters our perception of everything and allows the mind to imagine another world beyond the given one. For me, painting can often be a place to explore these other worlds. It would be interesting, maybe exciting to explore the possibilities much more deeply. One thing’s for sure though, the ideas for paintings usually come from my experience of the real outdoor world, so I stay connected with it through drawing. Having said that, there are times when I see something on a digital screen or in a book which grabs my imagination as a starting point for making art. I remember as a child seemingly just making things up, but when I look back at these drawings and paintings there’s usually a connection with something seen for real or something in a book, a magazine or on TV. I think it’s good to speculate through drawing and painting just to see where it leads but as far as commercial galleries are concerned that’s not what most of them are looking for. There are exceptions of course, but their job is to entertain and excite their customers minds, my job is to entertain my own mind.
