Alqantara #3
By tim smith

Alqantara is named after a street in Gaza City. The view I’ve painted is imagined — a lone minaret still standing amid the ruins, a survivor in a devastated landscape. This work forms part of a continuing series exploring the image of a single tower or minaret emerging from a destroyed city, a recurring symbol in my paintings of hope, endurance, and renewal.
I’m drawn to the way certain buildings remain standing when everything around them has gone — how they become more than architecture, taking on a kind of quiet resolve. These surviving structures seem to embody the will to endure, to remain visible when so much has been erased. They gather meaning simply by continuing to exist; they become landmarks of both loss and strength.
Though the view in Alqantara is not real, it speaks to something deeply human — that instinct to rebuild, to remember, and to find beauty even within destruction.
The painting is presented in a simple natural aged oak flat frame, 0.5 cm in width, giving it a warm, understated presence. It comes ready to hang with supplied wire.

About the artist
Tim's work is driven by a fascination with the changing world, contemporary culture and the history of art. These are often mixed together in what he wants to be a spontaneous blend of images rich in cultural references, held together by passages of pure painting and lyrical colour in a "new representationalism"
