Knock Fell and Cross Fell from Great Rundale, Cumbria

An outdoor drawing made as research for a commission. I spent three days exploring the seldom visited landscape of Great Rundale behind Dufton Pike. As soon as I walked into this landscape from Dufton I had the feeling of going back in time to the 18th century when the drystone walls were first erected and limestone quarried to make lime for the land and for building. My reveries was brought sharply into the 21st century when a Typhoon fighter jet roared overhead scattering the sheep. I caught the pilot’s eye I’m sure, he was that close! Then I made a quick sketch of the jet flying up the slope of Dufton Pike with a gnarled hawthorn tree in front.
