Alqantara #1
By tim smith

Alqantara is a street in Gaza city. The view is Alqantara 1 marks a new departure in my work. Named after a street in Gaza City, it depicts an imagined view — a lone minaret still standing amid destruction. This painting began my exploration of the single tower or minaret as a survivor of a ruined city, a recurring symbol of hope, endurance, and renewal.
I was struck by how a structure that endures when everything else has fallen can take on a powerful, human meaning — a quiet emblem of resilience. Alqantara reflects on that idea: that even in devastation, something remains upright, holding space for remembrance and the possibility of rebuilding.
Presented in a natural aged recycled oak flat batten frame, 0.5 cm wide, the painting comes ready to hang with supplied wire.

About the artist
Tim's work is driven by a fascination with the changing world, contemporary culture and the history of art. These are often mixed together in what he wants to be a spontaneous blend of images rich in cultural references, held together by passages of pure painting and lyrical colour in a "new representationalism"
