Birdtable
By tim smith

A night garden seen through abstraction — contrasts of light, memory, and time in quiet rotation.
Birdtable forms part of my nine-letter title series, exploring how single words can open onto layered spaces of memory and imagination. This painting suggests a window view onto a garden at night, where familiar shapes dissolve into abstraction — forms of light and shadow that hint at movement and stillness together.
The composition is strongly tonal and contrasty, with a dial-like wedge of colour in the upper right that acts as both focal point and quiet clock — a measure of time within the dark. Birdtable reflects on how night transforms the everyday, turning what we know into something half-remembered, half-dreamed.

About the artist
Tim's work is driven by a fascination with the changing world, contemporary culture and the history of art. These are often mixed together in what he wants to be a spontaneous blend of images rich in cultural references, held together by passages of pure painting and lyrical colour in a "new representationalism"
