Tiltshift

A quiet experiment in focus and framing — where the border becomes part of the painting itself.
This painting is part of my nine-letter title series, and also a kind of transitional piece. With Tiltshift, I was experimenting with the idea of the border — something that often appears in my work. Here, the border becomes part of the painting itself, rather than framing it from outside.
The influence comes partly from Indian and Persian art, where borders hold decorative and symbolic meaning, defining a space while also leading the eye inward. The title Tiltshift is borrowed from a web-based photographic program, and I liked how it suggests a small adjustment of focus — a shift in how we see.
I’m not entirely sure what this painting is “about,” but that’s part of its purpose: an open exploration of edge, frame, and perception.

tim smith

Tim's work is driven by a fascination with the changing world, contemporary culture and the history of art. These are often mixed together in what he wants to be a spontaneous blend of images rich in cultural references, held together by passages of pure painting and lyrical colour in a "new representationalism"
