Southwest
By tim smith

An imagined Dartmoor landscape — where Romantic storytelling and memory meet in rough light and texture.
Southwest is part of a series exploring places I’ve long wanted to visit but never quite reached — landscapes imagined or remembered from books, stories, and half-formed memories. Painted on rough grade sandpaper, the surface gives the image a tactile warmth, with a 1.5 cm sandpaper border that frames the work from within.
This piece draws on the rocks and tors of Dartmoor, a landscape that has always fascinated me through the lens of Romantic literature and storytelling — wild, mysterious, and enduring. It reflects on the pull of certain places, the sense of familiarity without experience, and how imagination can fill the spaces left by time and missed chances.

About the artist
Tim's work is driven by a fascination with the changing world, contemporary culture and the history of art. These are often mixed together in what he wants to be a spontaneous blend of images rich in cultural references, held together by passages of pure painting and lyrical colour in a "new representationalism"
