The Girl at the Window
By Jenny Fay

Timeless and poetic, this painting draws on the Nordic aesthetic of Danish painter Vilhelm Hammershøi. Like him, I have chosen muted colours and a precise composition to evoke stillness and a quiet, contemplative atmosphere. Centred around a solitary figure, the painting allowed me to explore the depiction of light and empty space reminiscent of works by another influence, Edward Hopper. However my looser style, with its visible brushwork and suggested detail, is more impressionistic creating a piece that is both subtle and atmospheric.
‘The Girl at the Window’ was painted from life in wintry light. The interior is an upper room of St John’s College, Oxford University where I spent several months working on a series of paintings.
The painting is made with handmade oil paints on linen panel. It comes ready to hang in a beautiful, bespoke frame carefully selected to echo the darker elements of the work and compliment the piece as a whole.
