'Script'

This painting is part of a series of abstract works created in 2024, in which I allowed myself to express whatever intuitively wanted to surface from my creative spirit without concern for outcome. It was a cathartic process, necessary for tentatively exploring paint again, as I had been working mainly with drawing materials and paper for years.

I feel that working with abstraction enables ideas and feelings to be expressed more freely in visual form, without literal explanation or reason. An abstract painting is like an instrumental piece of music, and without the literal visual forms there is more room for interpretation or for a work to speak to feeling rather than logic.

I enjoyed playing with the paint in this piece, scraping back layers and reworking. There are fragments of text typed on an old typrewriter embedded within the energetic marks. I called the piece, ‘Script’, as when I reflected on what resonated with me about this piece, it concerned something I was exploring in my personal life in relation to interpersonal communication, and which ‘scripts’ are conveyed, edited or hidden.
