Masquerade in Red

Masquerade in Red, is a reflection of contemporary society and culture. I am interested in exploring the human emotions of fear and anxiety that is prevalent in society today. I was Inspired by the mental health of young adults, people hide behind an identity or a mask to avoid been seen and judged.

The painting stirs a reaction in the viewer to look within.

It is made with oil on canvas, ready to hang, no framing required.

My intentions were to:

Use the mask as a metaphor, we are trying to protect our vulnerable inner true self. However, being our true selves is the best and most perfect thing you could ever be. People today are suffering, agitated, displaying anger, anxiety and a high level of emotions.

The reasoning behind the artistic tones used in the painting:

The mask was inspired by the musical The Phantom of the Opera, in which the main male character wears a mask on his face that symbolizes his vulnerability and the injustice he suffers from other people. He is forced to hide his disfigured face because it causes too much horror in other people.

The colours create a dynamic contrast with each other, the brush marks are visible.
I created a likeness of the sitter, who had ginger hair and green eyes.

The colour of the mask is insignificant, in that it is an immaterial tool.
