I was inspired to make this piece by the beautiful Celtic and Viking brooches. The triple spiral, or Triskele, at the terminals of the brooch are a traditional Celtic symbol and has been used throughout history. The word Triskele originates from Greek, meaning ‘three legged’.

The simple mechanics of this style of fastening makes it suitable to use as a brooch or scarf, kilt or hat pin.

In this tutorial I teach you how I form the twisted wire and shape it. Shape and position the spirals as well as creating the layered hinge for the pin, which adds a subtle detail. I also discuss finishing techniques for the brooch and have included many troubleshooting tips and tricks.

The brooch measures 1 1/3” across and is 1 2/3” tall (to the top of the spirals). The pin is 2” long.

• 24” 16 gauge soft round wire.
