Lydia of Thyatira, also referred to as St. Lydia was known as the woman of purple, due to her connection with purple dye. Devotion to St. Lydia is greater in the Orthodox Church than in the Latin Rite of the Roman Catholic Church, and this is evident by the myriad of icons depicting this woman. The Orthodox Churches have given her the title of “Equal to the Apostles,” which signifies her importance and level of holiness. It seemed appropriate to name this cross, with a central Amethyst after her!
The central part of the cross is made with thick copper wires, to form a frame, which I have then woven with very thin copper wire. A gem quality, micro faceted, dark Amethyst stone sits in the center, surrounded by thin copper wire. The ornate terminals of the cross have been created with swirls of wire around copper beads, giving the cross a Celtic look.
The handmade chain is created using double Viking knit, which I have finished with handmade end caps and a handmade clasp.
I have oxidised this piece, giving it an antiqued effect, to really highlight the detail.
The chain is 18” long. The cross is 1 1/3” wide and 1 7/8” tall.
This necklace comes in a jewellery box.
