Alkebulan is the ancient name for Africa (believed to be the oldest and only indigenous name), and referred to as the Mother of Mankind. The source of my inspiration for this pendant.
I have made the pendant with a central woven section of copper wire around the Amazonite agogo donut stone and extends up, into the bail. The woven wire is contrasted with wraps of smooth round wire and finished with spirals either side. This is echoed on the bail. These multi wraps of wire can be found in many types of African jewellery, particularly in the their bold necklace and bracelet cuffs. The Amazonite is a blue/green colour.
The pendant hangs from a handmade copper double Viking knit chain, which I have finished with handmade wire cones and copper beads. The chain is secured together with a woven hook clasp, which mirrors the detail on the pendant.
The chain is 17 1/4” long. The pendant measures 2 2/3” tall including the bail and is
1 7/8” wide.
I have oxidised this piece, giving it an antiqued look, to really highlight the detail.
This item comes in a jewellery box.
