Peekaboo IV

I have been working for several months on my Peekaboo series of large-scale drawings on paper that are drawn with charcoal, acrylic and sprayed with various varnishes. I always work in series, and often with the same or similar image again and again. I like to work this way; I imagine they are like cave paintings as the paper surface is pinned to my studio wall. My palette is paired down and simplified to focus purely on the image which starts it’s journey as a photo directly made and observed from my own body. Pencil and charcoal studies are drawn initially from the images until I isolate and hone in on the image I choose to scale up.

The tension between light and dark, form and matter and the image pushing out from the boundaries of the paper is an important part of this process. The surfaces are built up over time and they have many layers of charcoal and paint as they transform from drawing into painting and back into drawing again - I like the juxtaposition of working with dry materials on a dry surface, then wet on wet and back and forth I go until each work reaches the right ‘pitch’.

These works are close-up, intimate and emerging from darkness to light and to freedom and liberation. They are meant to tease, subvert and celebrate the female form. Large in scale, the imagery takes on a new perspective as a language of body and landscape and gender and representation.
