Books on fire

Birmingham City Library

Architect Francine Houben, Mecanoo’s Founding Partner, describes her design for the Library of Birmingham as the ‘People’s Palace’ and says her design was ‘inspired by the energy of this great city. I hope that the adventure of going through the building will draw many more people towards the joy of learning and reading, and even just to simply experience the pleasure of social interaction that a great public space can provide

The Library of Birmingham announced that Malala Yousafzai was the special guest at the official opening on Tuesday 3 September 2013.

The facts behind the new Library of Birmingham
• The Library is expecting 10,000 visitors every day;
• The total cost of the project is £188.8m;
• The original estimate was £193m;
• The Library will hold one million books

This is an impressive building the cycles surrounding the building are lit up with such a glow to the city centre on Broad Street.

Our lady who do you think she is meeting? The bright lights of the city have drawn her to Broad Street. Perhaps she is off to the theatre tonight.
