March 2016- This artwork is made on paper with acrylic paint. I have been fascinated with warrior women (amazon, valkyries) for a while now, and thought to work on this a bit. There is a lot of detail into this as the shield is carved wood with the details of a metallic wolf head. At the bottom of the artwork, I painted two birds (a crow and an eagle) near her feet, to show the reference to Odin, and to Nordic mythology in particular. I like to work with myth and legends as there is a lot to explore there.
The red soaked floor is in memory of blood filled battlefields. The sky is a storm of colors relating to the idea of war and disaster around. The subject of war is always messy and violent, which is why the color red is predominant in this painting. I spent several hours sketching and researching (although I didn’t spend as much time as I probably should have), then I worked on the drawing itself, finally moving on to paint at the end. This is the first time that I used acrylic on paper, and I really liked the result.
Technique tip: For the clouds, I used a palette knife to spread the paint and have this diversity of colours. I then used a toothpick to get the details inside the clouds.
