The Glenfinnan Monument is made with Winsor and Newton watercolours on paper.
This painting has three layers, one placed on top of the other. The base layer is the sky, which is constantly changing in colour and mood as we progress through the four seasons.
The second layer is the trees and background foliage behind the monument, similarly this aspect is constantly changing. In winter it is bare with twigs that are covered in snow. In this painting it is later summer and the colours are vibrant greens with a mixture of orange and yellow.
The final layer is the Glenfinnan Monument itself, this is stationary and has stood the test of time.
The 18m-high monument was built in 1815, the figure atop this tall construction is a lone, kilted highlander. The Glenfinnan Monument provides a poignant reminder of the clansmen who gave their lives to the Jacobite cause.
