The Audition

I wanted to use a chiaroscuro effect in this painting. The idea of the family peeping through the heavy canvas to watch the acrobats gave me the composition I needed. From the space between the family, the eye goes to the performers, through to the small figure in the stalls who could be auditioning them. I have dressed the family in the style of circus people to give unity as if they are interested in their ‘own’.
