Sea Cave, Aeolian Islands

This started as a very rapid sketch on a boat trip round these volcanic Mediteranean Islands. There was bright sunlight and the rocks were in fact reddish earth colours; a photo looked flat and failed to emphasise the convoluted shapes which had first engaged my attention.
A year or so later I had a further go at it. Thinking of the blue of the sea, I tried to imagine it in moonlight, with perhaps some phosphorescence as the waves lapped the walls. An overall transparent blue wash and some white highlights improved matters and brought the scene alive.

Available as a limited edition giclee print.
