In August 1959, for my NDD sketchbook, I drew these factories behind the North Shields Fishquay. This August I finally decided to turn the sketch into a painting. I have done a little modifying as there should be a lovely chimney to the left carrying the words ‘Tyne Brand’. Unfortunately this wrecked the composition so it had to go. Such are the problems of an artist’s life!
Although this is not intended to imitate L S Lowry I decided instead to imitate his very limited palette of Ivory Black, Flake White, Yellow Ochre, Vermilion and Prussian Blue. This required slightly more modern versions of most of these colours so archivability is much improved. Please Note that this picture is exhibiting in the New Maynard Gallery until mid November. If you are interested in the picture please contact me first before making any further moves. Thank you.
