Abandoned church in Levissi, Turkey.

By Kezia Noel-Paton

Abandoned church in Levissi, Turkey.

Sheep and the occasional tourist wandered quietly in and out, while I sketched one of the ruined churches in the former Greek town of Levissi - [now the Turkish Kayakoy] - made famous by the book ‘Birds without Wings’ by Louis de Berniere.            The ghost town is now preserved by UNESCO as a World Friendship and Peace Village, and once a year Greek descendants of those expelled around 1923 are welcomed back by the town for a ceremony of rememberance and reconciliation.
. Available as a professionally produced, limited edition giclee print.
