As a painter I am fascinated by our relationship with images, the value we attach to them, their ability to evoke emotion and sense of place. This relationship has changed with the ubiquity of digital technology. I recall the enjoyment of looking at family albums as a child and reflecting on the places I had visited. Now we are more likely to store away endless files electronically after a brief glance. This process is reflected in our increasingly transient relationship with places, as our lives become more busy and less appreciative of our surroundings.I explore the surfaces of the landscape. By rendering the paintings in this way, they have more physical and emotional depth than the source photography; and are more evocative of the landscape. These places are beautiful, stark, fragmented and often devoid of human presence. I use an unusual technique of collaging cut up fragments of personal photographs combined with water based paint.
