The Thorn Bush

I’ve seen coloured rags on thorn bushes before, when walking on Hampstead Heath looking for the source of the River Fleet. A couple of years ago we discovered that the big thorn bush at the end of the boreen was covered in not only various coloured rags and ribbons but also had a couple of little vials of liquid in its branches, along with a margarine tub containing some sacrificial offering – flower petals or a cheese sandwich? I was too superstitious to check it out.
