So for Hungary in the 50s, Holland in the 70s read Brazil in the early 80s - inevitably the best team of all time has to have not won the World Cup. In the case of the Brazil team of ‘82 they didn’t even make it to the semis, such was the relentless and ruthless Italy’s pokey-flukery of Paulo Rossi. This painting attempts to convey the spiritual awe I felt at this team of Gods – well, really it was just the best midfield of all time not to have won a World Cup and in time that might change to the best long haired midfield of all time not to have won a World Cup. It’s all been put through my usual football folk-art filter.
