‘Welcome to Zurich’ combines the never-ending themes of sex and death.
The title refers to the controversial practice of assisted suicide, which currently carries the penalty of a 14 year jail sentence in the UK. Debbie Purdy, Terry Pratchett and several others are campaigning to get the law changed.
The painting is deliberately high-key, painted over to virtually obliterate the image. Some people suggest seeing a white light when nearing death. Robert Rauschenberg erased a drawing by Richard de-Kooning.
We tend to avoid hospitals as they are psychologically disturbing, you are either a victim or a visitor.
Richard Price produced a series of paintings based on nurses, taken from magazine covers. His images are quite sexy and provocative, whereas the idea of a nurse standing over you holding a syringe is a much more sinister prospect.
The painting has been accepted in this year’s Threadneedle Prize and will be on show at The Mall Galleries in London until 8th October.
