Born in Manhattan, New York, Robert, an American actor who made his screen debut aged five when he appeared in his fathers film Pound and has worked consistently in film and TV ever since.
During the 80’s he appeared in a number of ‘coming of age’ movies associated with the Brat Pack (Emilio Estevez, Rob Lowe, Demi Moore, Judd Nelson, etc), notably Less Than Zero (1987). Whilst this brought his acting to the Critics attention it also pushed an existing drug habit one step further … a habit he picked up from his father. The 90’s brought bigger film roles, Air America (1990), Natural Born Killers (1994) and an Academy nomination and BAFTA for Chaplin (1992) but also a number of drug-related arrests.
By 2001 he did achieve lasting sobriety and his career began to take off with Gothika (2003), Zodiac (2005) and he achieved rave reviews for his lead in the hugely successful Iron Man (2007). Another Academy nomination and a Golden Globe for his lead in Sherlock Holmes (2009) have seen him evolve into a most respected actor.
