Anthony Gormley’s installation, ‘Blind Light’, at the Hayward Gallery led us into a transparent cell filled with opaque mist. The sensation was of a white blindness: only at the edge could you see out, and from outside the view was of misty shapes moving, with a face or a hand briefly in focus while pressed to the wall.
I covered the board with matte acrylic medium textured with a palette knife - when dry I puddled water onto it and dropped in diluted acrylic inks, some of them iridescent. The hand, face and arm I painted slightly impasto with opaque acrylics.
I aimed to convey the same sense of unreal dissociation as the installation had imposed.
