Island of Death: San Michele
Artists Description

I was drawn like a magnet to the cemetery Island of San Michele where Venice buries all their dead.  It is truly unique, a whole Island with graves dating back to the dawn of the Island.  I read about a legend where a little girl was drowned accidentally because the gondola she was on, was hit by another gondola and her little coffin was later brought to San Michele.  The legend goes that at times, candles appear around a tiny white coffin just off the Island.  It inspired me to do this odd painting and poem of San Michele surrounded by angels from Heaven watching over all those who travel in Venice’s lagoon and canals.
