24 April -13 July 2008
The work ‘Cultural Travelling in Leeds Communities’ was exhibited as part of the group show ‘Passing Through’ at the Leeds Art Gallery,
along with works by Georgina Starr, Annelies Strba and Rosalind Nashashibi, acquired for the Gallery’s collection through the Contemporary Art Society’s Special Collections Scheme.
Janis’ video-installation explored the private spaces inhabited by the West Indian, Chinese, Muslim, Greek, Sikh and Polish communities in Leeds. Cultural Travelling in Leeds Communities was researched and filmed over a year spent working with the different groups over meals which the artist filmed culminating in an invitation to share a communal meal together. Footage of these events was on display in the gallery along with the table where the meal at the gallery itself took place.
