A rather emotive painting of a Normandy War Veteran I know personally, Allan Dale. This painting was inspired by a photo taken of Allan when he was commemorating the 60th Anniversary of D-Day, June 6th 2004. The title is part of the poem by Laurence Binyon (1869-1943), the full version of which is: “They shall not grow old, As we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, Nor the years condemn, At the going down of the sun And in the morning We will remember them” I wanted to create a very textured piece as well as trying to capture a likeness of Allan and the beach. Therefore, I used some coarse decorative sand mixed in with the first undercoat I used on the canvas. This gives the beach area a bit more authenticity, but I also think it enriches the overall effect of the painting. The underpainting was done with a palette knife and emulsion, with the sand simply randomly mixed in as I applied it. The rest was painted using high quality acrylic paints. It will be varnished in a choice of matt or gloss free of charge upon purchase and comes supplied with a certificate of authenticity. Please feel free to email me with any enquiry you may have regarding this painting. I would be happy to reproduce a similar one with a member of your family as the subject, if you prefer.
This painting is reserved for the Summer Open Exhibition at Wolds Gallery, Bainton - May 28th to July 1st 2010.
