I wanted to show that in today’s society, we’re all living a lot longer; but there is no denying we are all so vulnerable and fragile.
It was my intention to provoke the viewer/s to look further into the painting’s meaning, by deliberately obscuring the Abraham Lincoln quote on the side - “And in the end it’s not years in your life that count, it’s the life in your years”.
For me, the artist, it makes one think about how we view things…LIFE and how we LIVE our lives generally.
The old men feature a lot in my work and for this piece, I needed to specifically show thirteen faces, of which are subtly hidden in the background, almost insignificant…or are they? Another way of looking at why there are thirteen men, was to suggest the actual number for some people could be a problem…13, lucky or unlucky? Is your cup half full or half empty? The question again…how positive or negative are we about life?
