Sue McLearie
Sue is a contemporary Artist based in Hampshire, creating unique creature sculptures using galvanised wire and printed papers.
Look closely and you will discover that the sculptures have not been painted at all, but have been finished with a ’skin’ of coloured papers.
These small pieces of colour have been gleaned from hundreds of magazines and make each sculpture unique.
‘My sculptures are created by drawing a three-dimensional armature in garden wire. I then weave and mould three ’skins’ in and around the form using printed papers and occasionally other materials.
The technique is very labour intensive and depending on the size and colour availability, each sculpture takes from four to eight weeks to complete.
Sometimes they carry subtle wording on their bodies where customers request sentences and phrases that mean something special/amusing to the recipient.
Although starting out mainly sculpting wildlife, more commissions are coming through for domestic animals and I’m finding them a joy to work on, especially the dog breeds. If required, I complete each dog with subtle wording on it’s body stating the attributes particular to that breed.
It is always a thrill when I’m asked to sculpt a breed or species that I’ve not created before.
As I say on my website, ‘commissions welcomed, all creatures considered’ (hence the Dung Beetle!)
So far, so good…
