” Commissioning a bird font from Helen last year was inspiring and hugely
satisfying. We live at opposite ends of the south coast, we never met in
person, and I didn’t see the finished font until it arrived, but this didn’t
matter - we seemed to connect, sharing thoughts through words and
photographs, threading ideas on the phone and by email.

It was my mum and dad’s ruby wedding anniversary and my family wanted to
give them something unique and lasting that they would both love. They have
a large garden so, looking for garden sculptures, I found Helen’s website. I
was struck immediately by the presence and beauty of her work.

After emailing and speaking to Helen on the phone, I felt confident about
the commission. We dealt with all the practicalities and then got on with
the creative part of the commssion.

I talked about my parents, where they live in rural France, their
similarities and differences - my dad’s love of mountains, my mum’s of the
sea - and what I liked about Helen’s sculptures.

I love the way the glass mosaics look like veins of precious ore, just
surfacing, how bubbles of light and air are delicately captured and held by
metal, wood and stone. And how Helen forges separate found pieces into a
single whole, smoothed and blended as if by time and tide.

So the Four Elements was commissioned, and although we knew it was
beautiful from the photographs, we hadn’t realised how tactile and
multi-layered the three dimensional font would be. Helen had made a unique
object that surpassed all our expectations. Our parents were delighted, the
birds are very happy, and every visitor stops to admire it.”

  • Wonderful work. Like something from a Dali painting live in 4-D.
