Francesca Owen

I have studied the history, theory and practice of painting at the prestigious Slade School of Fine Art, graduating with Honors in 2009. Since then I have exhibited at the beautiful Fulham Palace Gallery, sold work to private and corporate clients, completed an Artist Residency in Asia and have begun a Masters degree in Art and Environment at University College Falmouth. I paint images of landscapes in oils and I am investigating natural dyes from plants to directly use materials from the environments that I paint. I aim to capture the beauty of nature working from life, memory and studies sometimes on my boat where I live or in my studio both in Cornwall. I accept commissions and host workshops on natural dye techniques so please feel free to contact me about this.

I have studied the history, theory and practice of painting at the prestigious Slade School of Fine Art, graduating with Honors in 2009. In 2005 I was awarded the Worshipful Company of Painter’s Stainers Prize, whilst studying at the Slade I was thankfully supported by the Euan Uglow Memorial Scholarship and on completing my Honours degree, in 2009 I was awarded the Jeremy Cubitt Prize.

Since then I have exhibited at the beautiful Fulham Palace Gallery for the ‘On Land’ exhibition, 2009. I have sold work to private and corporate clients, and completed commissions. I undertook an Artist Residency in Asia coinciding with a travel project in India.

I have recently begun a Masters degree in Art and Environment at University College Falmouth.

I paint images of landscapes in oils and natural dyes. I aim to capture the beauty of nature working from life, memory and studies on my boat where I live or in my studio both in Cornwall.

I host workshops to give an overview of the multiple uses of plants as a means of creating awareness about sustainable colour techniques. The ‘Slow Dyeing’ Workshops encourage participants to look below the surface, to question where does colour from? Participants are guided through the Dyeing process, having the opportunity to learn about the techniques behind ‘Slow Dyeing’ whilst using plants to colour a variety of materials.

I am currently working with Newlyn Art Gallery to create a ‘Colour Garden’ for the Gallery, and workshops with the local community will be carried out over the Summer 2011.

Beauty and the ferociousness of nature inspire me. I question the human relationship with the natural world and enjoy the concepts of Joseph Beuys, Rudolph Steiner and Friedrich Neitzche and Sigmund Freud.
